4 Ways to Style Pregnancy Shoes for Any Outfit
12 summer-style staples you need in your closet for a refreshed and classic look.
When you think about pregnancy, the first thing that comes to mind isn’t typically the shoes. Of course, you may be aware that parts of a woman’s body often swell during pregnancy, and feet are particularly susceptible to that swelling. Still, the need for the right shoes to handle that swelling is often overlooked.
On the contrary, when you do think about practical shoes for pregnancy, you might not be considering style. When it comes to practical shoes for just about anything, the more important factor is how well they do their job. But, if you’re anything like me, you might find it impossible to just give up on style altogether, and thankfully with pregnancy shoes, you don’t have to. There are several brands and styles out there that allow you to look good and feel good in your pregnancy shoes. Here are a few of our favorite ways to style your pregnancy shoes so you can have some practical kicks and wear them confidently.
1. The Colorful Workout Look
Your personal health always matters, but it takes on a new meaning when you're pregnant. Doctors recommend aerobic activity for pregnant women, so naturally, the aerobic activity requires the right outfit to break a sweat (or at least get your steps in). And if you’re a fan of brightening the room, there are plenty of options for colorful kicks so you can get your workout done in style.
We love a pair of these colorful pregnancy sneakers with any black pair of leggings and a white tee, but we also love to go for subtle matches in color. So if you’re going with the red shoes, you could wear a simple shirt that features the same color of red somewhere (maybe a logo, an outline, etc.), or if you have it, you could go with a top that features the same light blue/green that’s on the back of the shoe. But our big tip here is to make sure the shades match. So if you’re going red and red, don’t contrast these bright red kicks with a deeper red on your shirt or pants. The difference in shade will be more evident than you could imagine. If you can’t match them, go with white, black, or gray instead.
2. Athleisure: the Errands Outfit
Working out doesn’t have to be the only time you can wear comfy, breathable clothes. We’re all in luck here. Athleisure wear is more trendy than ever. You can wear your leggings or biker shorts almost anywhere and still be in style. And - you guessed it - they pair perfectly with these pregnancy kicks.
Regarding athleisure wear, I prefer to go more toward black and white, particularly for shoes. A pair of black, white, or gray shoes will work with more outfits, making getting dressed to run an errand quicker and simpler. Athleisure wear can include a workout dress, leggings, joggers, biker shorts, or other athletic shorts for working out. For tops, you can pair any bottom options with a white, black, or gray tank top, t-shirt, or long sleeve, depending on the season. But remember: this is athleisure. Casual is a good thing.
3. Streetwear Shoes: Athleisure Version
If you’re aiming for athleisure, you don’t have to wear shoes that you would actually work out in. It’s not a test of whether or not you can drop everything and run a marathon; it’s simply a style. This being said, above, we showed some options of athletic sneakers for your athleisure style. Now, we’re showing some of the streetwear options.
Streetwear shoes are often the perfect look for athleisure because they’re not made for working out, so any shape or material that might make a shoe more practical but less stylish can be forgotten. When I wear streetwear shoes with an athleisure outfit, I tend to stick with the plain colors I described for athleisure wear above. The blacks, grays, and whites will never do you wrong. But street shoes give athleisure wear a different vibe. My tips for wearing streetwear shoes with an athleisure outfit are to keep your ankles visible; if you’re wearing leggings, make them 7/8th length leggings. With joggers, roll the bottoms up just a little.
4. Streetwear Shoes: Casual and Cool
Finally, one of my favorite styles (and one you can achieve with pregnancy shoes) is streetwear shoes with a cute outfit. You could be wearing jeans or other colored pants, you could wear a dress, you could wear a skirt, but on your feet? Sneakers. This is where I’ll opt for the lifestyle sneakers that may have a pop of color; whether you’re wearing a patterned shirt, a flowery dress, or classic jeans and a white t-shirt, that pop of color can make your shoes the perfect compliment to your outfit or it can the perfect way to tie it all together. This style, the streetwear shoes with a casual outfit, is my favorite way to look effortlessly cool. And thanks to the pregnancy shoes available now, you can achieve it at any point.
Conclusion
Pregnancy shoes are about comfort and convenience. They need to be breathable and fit swelling feet without squeezing them in. Some pregnancy shoes, like the ones pictured above, can be slipped on without tying the laces or bending over; this adds more convenience and comfort as it eliminates the bending in half that can be uncomfortable for a pregnant person. But no matter what pregnancy shoes you have on your feet, it’s still important to feel confident in your outfit, and shoes are a big part of that. Just because you’re opting for pregnancy shoes doesn’t mean you’re not choosing a style.
